DW Sports Ltd was founded in 2009, when Dave Whelan bought out the remaining 52 JJB Fitness Clubs and attached retail stores. In just three years, we have established ourselves as a thriving industry-leader, in both the fitness club and sports retail markets.
There are now 66 DW Fitness Clubs, all equipped with modern equipment and offering our members the chance to develop a healthy lifestyle at affordable prices. With an ever expanding number of dedicated members (now excess of 250,000), we have ambitious plans to continue to increase the number of clubs and maintain our commitment to a clean, healthy, state-of-the-art health club experience for our members.
In addition we have the DW Sports Stores – now one of the UK’s leading retailers of branded sports apparel, footwear and equipment. With top products at sensational prices, we now have over 60 retail stores (all attached to a Fitness Club) and a fantastic online store www.dwsports.com
Who is Dave Whelan?
Dave Whelan is the Founder and Chairman of DW Sports Ltd and is one of the nation’s most admired businessmen.
A former footballer for Blackburn Rovers FC, Dave had to retire due to an unfortunate injury in the 1960 FA Cup Final. From what appeared to be a devastating setback, he turned to business and then took a single sports shop in Wigan and built it into the 400+ retail superstore giant that was JJB, before selling the business in 2007.
Dave also bought his local football team Wigan Athletic and was responsible for the fairytale story, where in less than the ten years ‘The Latics’ somehow rose from the bottom tier of the football league, into a perennial Premier League outfit.
